S.S.
Yongala
On
the 23rd of March 1911, a luxurious passenger and freight
ship - the S.S. Yongala, sailed into the eye of a cyclone.
On
board were 122 people, a racehorse called Moonshine,
a red Lincolnshire bull, and cargo for northern ports.
It was not identified until nearly 50 years later, when
it was found alive with the activity of thousands of
sea creatures.
The loss of the vessel had a tremendous impact on Townsville
and Cairns, with most passengers hoping to return to
their homes and loved ones.
